netpbm and imagemagick
Hi there,
I guess I'm not the only person using the Gallery script. For now I only managed to get the standard GD tool to work for the creation of thumbnails.
Has anyone succeeded in using NetPBM and/or Jhead ?
Imagemagick should be installed at server-level... is Steadfast (Nozonenet) supporting Imagemagick ? If so ... what's the path to it ?

If I remember correctly, the default path for ImageMagick is /usr/bin. However, I've installed NetPBM and Jhead in the users home without any issues.

Strange, I really can't get it to work. Did you install Gallery yourself or did you (like me) use the automated EasyApps installer ?

I can't do everything.
Unfortunately, because of the restrictions in place to prevent SPAMing and other exploits on shared hosting, ImageMagick and NetPBM will not work with Gallery, as the utilize the PHP exec function, I believe. GD will work, and that's all that I use. I've tried to get ImageMagick and NetPBM to work for a bit, and I've not been able to.

Thanks for your reply Ray. Too bad it doesn't work, because now I can't use the nifty features of the gallery like the slideshow and so (my girlfriend would like to see those fancy things working on her site *sigh*). And I must say I also don't really like the quality of the GD-thumbnails.
BKotur: are you sure they both (netpbm and imagemagick) work in your gallery ???

I installed Gallery myself as well as uploaded the Netpbm/Jhead files manually. However, this is on my own servers, not Steadfast's shared hosting servers.

Are resellers also hosted on the shared hosting servers ?

I can't answer that. I colocate my own servers. I would assume that if you got a VPS, you could do as you please with the server. But, whether or not you feel comfortable managing a VPS is for you to answer.

Resellers are located on the same servers as shared hosting.
With a VPS, you would have full control over PHP/Apache/etc configuration. However, a working knowledge of Linux is recommended for VPS. It doesn't have to be a very advanced knowledge of Linux, but enough to get around in the OS, etc.
