More than 99,000 Commonwealth Edison customers are without power Sunday morning throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs following severe thunderstorms that caused widespread damage to power lines.

About 52,000 customers in Chicago and nearby suburbs, which include Berwyn, Westchester and Oak Park are in the dark as of Sunday at 10:30 a.m., according to ComEd spokesman Luis Diaz.

In the northern suburbs, 25,800 customers are without power, and in the south suburbs, 13,400 customers are without power, Diaz said.

In the western suburbs, 7,200 customers remain without power, Diaz said.

Chicago and nearby suburbs were the most affected by the storms, which began around 6 a.m. and continued on until 8 a.m., Diaz said.

Although a severe thunderstorm watch has ended, showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, crews from the city Department of Streets and Sanitation’s Bureaus of Forestry and Electricity have responded to 412 reports of trees damaged, 32 reports of traffic signals out, 18 reports of light poles damaged and 34 reports of wires down as of 10:30 a.m., according to spokesman Matt Smith.
