Why cant I log into phpMyAdmin?

I'm unsuccessfully trying to install Wordpress. In the MySQL database it says 'Built in phpMyAdmin control panel' which is a link to phpMyAdmin, i then put in my username and password for that database and it says 'Error: Cannot log in to the MySQL server'.

Any ideas why this is?

Login as your root user for MySQL and double check that you've created the user and granted the permissions for the database and for the host that's logging-in(i.e. localhost).
