View Full Version : Problems with my restored database?

I recently moved my phpbb forum from my old host to steadfast.net. I did a backup at the old host with phpMyAdmin and restored it here using bigdump.php.

I now see that all the special characters used in foreign usernames and all the curly quotes and emdashes in ordinary posts were either not copied correctly during backup or were translated improperly during the restore process.

For instance, every emdash ( — ) was replaced by —

Is this a problem with phpbb, phpMyAdmin, the restore process using bigdump.php or with the configuration of the server here?

This issue resolved itself nicely. I learned that it's very likely that my old host didn't have their server configured correctly and that's why when I backed up my database through their phpMyAdmin that it didn't preserve those special characters.

Fortunately, I also did a backup through the administrative control panel in phpbb and those special characters appear in that backup. I uploaded that alternative backup and everything is working properly.

I'm planning to set up a forum on one of my websites and want to ask a question about performance:

What account type you're using and how many visitors per day you have?

Performance is also dependent on the software choice you use too. Some forum applications are far more efficient in terms of resource utilizations than others are.
