what is DNS and ICANN?

I want to register a domain name,so I have visited a lot of website, I wonder what is DNS and ICANN? I am fresh in this field ,can somne guys can suggest me the registrar you trust? :)

In simple terms, DNS stands for the domain name system. Computers communicate via numbers (IP addresses), such as 10.1.2.3, and DNS is what allows humans to more easily access the computers (such as your website) by using a name (www example com) that gets translated into the harder to remember number. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) simply is the authoritative coordinator of the DNS system. As an enduser there's little you really need to know about ICANN other than that the registrar you use should either be an ICANN accredited registrar, or a reseller for one.

If you are hosting with Steadfast, you could just get your domain through Steadfast, who is a reseller of a reputable domain registrar, which would make your support a little easier.

Steadfast are around 3 USD more expensive than GoDaddy, but I am sure that it's worth the extra 3 USD to avoid potential hazzle and as BG points out; You'd get support from one single provider for all your hosting needs, which in your situation is a big plus I'd think :)

Doesn't GoDaddy charge $8.95 a year? That is the same rate we charge for domains now.

Oops, sorry - my memory plays tricks on me. The last I ordered with them I got my domain names for around 6 USD per year. With their current price-list you're right indeed, Karl.

yes it depends on where you want it hosted too...$9 per year usually it is $20 dollars a year for domain names
