"Enterprise Level SPAM Filtering"
http://steadfast.net/blog/2007/enterprise-level-spam-filtering/
i just noticed this blog post.
from the post: “We have been testing a SPAM filtering appliance . . . ”
i posted a question about this to the blog and i'm going to post it here too (since discussion about it on the blog is more awkward):
what proprietary anti-spam device did steadfast purchase, an ironport?
from the post: "For our shared hosting clients this means, we will no longer be running SpamAssassin on our shared hosting mail server . . . "
this concerns me. i'd much rather rely on an open solution rather than a closed one. is there any possibility of spamassassin remaining an option for folks to enable on a per account basis?

We are not enabling SpamAssassin on standard shared hosting accounts, but it is available for resellers.
We ended up going with a MailFoundry solution.

is it too much work? why the differentiation?
i'm essentially a reseller. i sign my customers up on their behalf with various hosting solutions. i don't want to be a middleman tacking a fee onto your service. is there a place for my way of selling your services in your business scheme?

It is most likely easier and more resource efficient to run one single spam-parser than a ditto spam assassin installation. Add to that the fact that the enterprise spam solution most likely is better than spam assassin.
You should see the spam-protection you get from Steadfast as an value added service.

As Henrik said, SpamAssassin just puts too much load on our mail server, causing various issues. Having a separate solution eliminates that issue and offers MUCH better SPAM protection.
We still allow SpamAssassin's use for reseller's as we need to be contacted for each domain to be added to the system and for reseller's with a good number of customers that just ends up being too much back and forth, though we do have several reseller users that have switched to the new solution.
If each user is getting their own account, then just contact us once you get the welcome email to tell us to setup the filtering for the domains on that account and you should be all set. The user would then get a login to login directly to manage their own filtering settings, etc. If you want control over them, not wanting you client to control those settings, we can also give you one user account for all of your users domains. We could also combine those two, giving both you and your customer logins and access to the domains.
